Texas History Projects
Students built
missions to represent the Espiritu Santo de Zuniga. Other
students participated in biolography dressups to represent
people who had an important impact on Texas during the days of
the Filibusters, Empresarious, and Revolutionaries.

Council Convention
MLMS Student Council
high point earners joined over a thousand of other student
council members for a convention in San Marcos, Texas. The
students attended different seminars covering activities and
issues to bring back and share with the campus. Some of the
projects and seminars attended were, "Drug Free", "Avoiding
Dating Abuse", "Delete the "R" word for Special Olympics",
"Africa's Water Crisis", "Dangers of Texting and Driving", and
"Wreath of Thanks".

Mr. Sneed's Texas
history classes used group work to present different cultural
aspects of Native American tribes.

Exxon/Mobil
Presents Grant Check to Maude Laird Middle School
Exxon Mobil, in partnership with Spencer Distributing and Fuel
Supply of Palestine, Texas has a long history of supporting
educational programs. They believe it is fundamentally
important to encourage the next generation to pursue studies and
careers in fields involving math and science.
This year, Maude Laird Middle School, was selected to receive
the Exxon/Mobil Educational Alliance Program Grant for Math in
the amount of $500.00.
Maude Laird Middle School was sponsored by Texstop Mobil on
Highway 259 North as a demonstration of community awareness for
their local trade area school.
Texstop Mobil manager Mandy Thomas and Tony Tucker, from Spencer
Distributing, presented the $500.00 grant check to Principal
April Cox and math teachers, Alaina Gearheart, Delina Chitwood,
and Casey Freeman on behalf of the 2011 Exxon/Mobil Educational
Alliance Program.
The alliance program has provided approximately 3,400 grants to
schools across the nation in 2011.

Veterans Day Program
In the annual
Veterans Day program, veterans, families and students were
inspired by an assembly in honor of those who have served our
country. Special musical presentations were performed by the
band, choir, orchestra and Ms. Anderson. Slide shows saluting
the service of the veterans were shown. Student council officers
spoke of the history of each branch while service flags were
displayed. Kilgore’s honor guard performed the honors of
presenting and retiring our flag. Gore
Kemp, Kilgore’s oldest WWII survivor, introduced this year’s
speaker, Army Spc. Aaron
Davis of Kilgore. Davis
was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Silver Medal. A
reception for the veterans and their families was hosting in the
library.

Driven Instruction
Seventh grade math students are using student driven instruction
to review math skills. Students worked in different cooperative
groups utilizing different manipulatives to practice skills.
The highlight for the students was to individually master
skills in order to advance to the IPOD group and participate in
fraction application.

Region VII Food Fair
MLMS communications class represented KISD at the Region VII
food fair. Students enjoy sampling food while interviewing
presenters about their advertising strategies.

Boo
Buddies
The MLMS student council surprised the teachers with "Boo Buddy"
gifts. The council likes to treat the teachers for all their
time and dedication to teaching. Lauren Jodry presents new
teacher Ms. Wiley with a gift.

All
Region Choir
13 MLMS 7th & 8th
grade choir students went to PTJH to compete against 170
students in our region for a place in the ALL-Region Choir. Of
those 13, 12 students MADE the ALL-Region Choir!!!!

Pink Day for Breast Cancer Awareness
The MLMS athletic department sponsored a "Pink Day" to raise
awareness of breast cancer and the need in finding a cure
through research. Students had competitions between grades and
the school was challenged to be "tough enough" to wear pink.

This year's dance crew contestants are The Flashbacks, The
Unique Freaks, and Swag.

Teacher Donates to Locks of Love
MLMS math teacher, Delina Chitwood, cut and donated twelve inches of her hair to
Locks of Love, a charity that makes wigs for cancer patients. Way to go, Mrs.
Chitwood!

Meet You at the Pole
A student led event, Meet You at the Pole, was held before school on Wednesday
the 28th. Students took turns sharing Bible verses, prayer, music and pledges.

MLMS First Pep Rally
The first pep rally of the year was a great success! Ms.
Haralson won the "Kiss the Dog" Contest sponsored by the PTA.
Seventh graders were double winners by capturing the spirit
stick and having the longest spirit chain.

 Patriotic Density Lab
After class
discussion in remembrance of 9-11, seventh grade students
participated in a lab examining the density of different
substances. The colors of the lab created a patriotic red,
white, and blue theme necklace that the students had the
opportunity to keep and examine changes throughout the day.

First Jersey Day
MLMS 8th graders were
excited to be issued jerseys for the first game of the
year! Best wishes for a great season!

Stuco Hosts Breakfast for Teachers
Student Council kicked off a new year by hosting breakfast for
the teachers during in-service. Stuco had a busy week planning
activities for the students.

Students enjoyed meeting new faces and visiting with past
teachers at "Meet the Teacher" at MLMS.

6th Grade Orientation
At sixth grade orientation, current MLMS 8th grade Peer Leaders
welcomed the new students with tours and games. The program
offers incoming students a chance to make friends with peer
leaders who will help them adjust to the new school throughout
the year.

Youth for Christ
A national, student
led, non-denominational organization that supports and
encourages Christian values among students.
