Selection of Members
of the National Honor Society
Membership in this chapter is an honor
bestowed upon a student. Selection for
membership is by a faculty council and is based on
outstanding scholarship, character, leadership and
service. Once selected, members have the
responsibility to continue to demonstrate these
qualities.
SECTION 1 To be eligible
for membership, the candidate must be a member of
the junior or senior class. Candidates must have
been in attendance at Kilgore High School for the
equivalent of one semester.
SECTION 2 Candidates must
have a cumulative scholastic average of 90.00 or
better from the 9th grade to the six-weeks
immediately prior to selection of members. Each
candidate must have completed Algebra I, Geometry,
and either be enrolled in or have completed Algebra
II or a third year of science. Candidates shall then
be evaluated on the basis of service, leadership,
and character.
SECTION 3 The selection of
each member to the chapter shall be by a majority
vote of the Faculty Council. Selection to NHS is a
privilege, not a right. Students do not apply
for membership; instead, academically eligible
students provide information to be used by the local
selection committee to support their candidacy for
membership. Membership is granted only to those
students selected by the Faculty Council. This is
not an election, nor is membership automatically
conveyed simply because a student has achieved a
specified level of academic performance. The student
must demonstrate overall outstanding performance in
the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and
character. A five-point rating scale is used in the
selection process. A cumulative average of 4.0 is
required for further consideration into the honor
society.
