Early
Risers Earn College Credit at KHS
Twenty-one students at Kilgore High School are
getting up a little earlier this semester in order
to take advantage of a dual credit course. The
students are enrolled in U.S. Government for the
fall semester taught by Mr. Dean Kinney, a Kilgore
College instructor. Each of the 21 students has
the opportunity to earn six hours of college
credit by the end of the school year.
This is
the first dual credit course being taught on the
KHS campus. In the past, Advanced Placement
Government has been offered, but an AP class
requires students to take an exam in order to have
the opportunity for college credit. Dual credit
classes allow students to earn credit by passing
the class, not just one special test.
According to Mr. Kinney, “Students in the dual
credit classes participate more than the regular
classes on the college campus. They tend to be
more motivated than the average full-time college
student. I really enjoy teaching my dual credit
classes.”
Students taking the dual credit course were able
to pay a lower tuition rate, and in addition, KISD
provided the textbooks for the class. The reduced
tuition allowed more students to be able to afford
the class.
When
asked why someone would want to take a dual credit
class, Raven Wiley responded, “I wanted to get
college credit and the experience of being in a
college class.” Michael Gage added, “I needed to
get ready for college, and this class offered that
opportunity.”
The
rigor of the class tends to be a little more
difficult than most high school classes. Kitt
Sechrist, another student in the class, said,
“This class has more discussions than some of my
other classes. The only drawback is the time of
day.” Gage added, “For this class we are expected
to do more preparation outside of class time.”
The KHS
dual credit class meets Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday each week from 7:00 – 7:50 a.m. The class
meets in the testing center of the CRC building
across Longview Street from the main high school
campus. During this first semester the students
are studying U. S. Government, and during the
second semester they will be covering Texas
government.
If you
have any questions about dual credit classes or
other offerings at Kilgore High School, please
call the counselors’ office at the high school at
903-988-3901.

Mr. Brown- Our
Principal
With
the departure of Mr. Wheeley, the title,
Principal, needed to be filled. Last
years students had been wondering,
"Who's going to be the new principal?
Is it going to be someone we recognize
or someone completely new?" When that
first day of school arrived we got our
answer. It was none other than Mr. Greg
Brown. Walking around the halls and
through the cafeteria during lunch, he
greeted students and talked with them
not only for him to meet the students
but for the students to meet him. The
start of the school year is off to a
great start with this new principal of
ours and KHS welcomes him. "Go Dogs!"
