Benchmark Testing
Kilgore ISD’s formative
benchmark assessment program provides a foundation on which to base
decisions regarding curriculum design, delivery and professional
development. It serves as a vehicle for examining how well programs
are achieving desired results. The assessment program evaluates
student progress toward identified objectives and provides
diagnostic information to help teachers adjust the delivery of
curriculum to address learning gaps for all student groups
identified through The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The
district assessment program is designed to determine and monitor
student progress on each learning objective for the content areas of
math, language arts, science and social studies prior to the
expected time of mastery each spring.
Grades/Subjects Assessed
Math and Language Arts (reading) benchmark assessments are
administered in grades K through 11. Science assesses student
progress in grades 4 through 11. Social Studies benchmark exams will
assess students in grades 6 through 11.
Grading
Grades are required to be assigned for each math, language arts,
science and social studies benchmark exam throughout the 2010-11
school year.
Development and Reporting
Benchmark assessment
questions were locally developed by district content specialists.
All questions are aligned with Texas Department of Education and
local objectives. Each test models the content, context and
cognitive level of its corresponding state assessment. In
grades/subjects where there is no corresponding state test, each
benchmark is designed to model the rigor of the next state-assessed
course/subject.
Reports are available to
provide parent/guardians with important data outlining how their
child is progressing on individual learning objectives contained in
the written curriculum. These reports are available upon request and
can be provided by your child’s teacher.
LAT Testing
Linguistically Accommodated Testing (LAT) involves providing linguistic
accommodations during testing so that qualifying English Language Learners (ELLs)
can better understand the language of the test and have a more meaningful and
valid assessment of academic knowledge and skills.
LAT was developed to fulfill federal NCLB requirements for testing recent
immigrant ELLs who are Limited English Proficient (LEP)-exempt under Texas law
in grades and subjects used in AYP calculations.
LAT math is given to all LEP-exempt students in grades 3-8, and 10
who meet all exemption criteria in
their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd school year in the U.S.
LAT science is given to all LEP-exempt students in grade 5, 8, and 10
who meet all exemption criteria in their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd school year in the
U.S.
LAT reading and ELA may
be given to 2nd and 3rd year LEP-exempt
immigrants in grades 3-8 and 10 who meet all exemption criteria.
LAT is NOT given to 1st year LEP-exempt immigrants
who meet all exemption criteria.
Eligibility for LAT testing is determined by the Language Proficiency Assessment
Committee (LPAC).
